In the fediverse since 2017. I mostly talk sports. If something on the internet doesn’t spark joy, mute it.

Do not yell at me simply because I am in front of you and the people responsible for the problems are not. It is extremely unpleasant.

  • It’s interesting – Mr Watts clearly wants to say “no” but mostly can only come up with “there’s not really a good way to objectively compare,” which is surprising because, in music history terms, the time between the Beatles and Taylor is pretty short. More than anything, I think we’ve had enough time since the Beatles were active for their cultural influence to seep into literally everything, and it will be a lot easier to compare once we’ve seen whether Swift’s oeuvre has the same cultural relevance down the road

To reach No 1 in the 1960s, The Beatles had to sell hundreds of thousands of copies each week. Records such as Meet The Beatles! and A Hard Day’s Night sold more than a million copies within weeks of release, illustrating the very different commercial environment in which The Beatles operated. For obvious reasons, no artist today sells in anything approaching those numbers, making like-for-like sales irrelevant. Instead the Billboard 200 is nowadays calculated by a complex system that begins with physical album sales and then adds what is called track equivalent albums (TEA) and streaming equivalent albums (SEA) – 10 downloaded song sales, or 2,500 ad-supported and 1,000 paid/subscription audio/video streams are considered the equivalent of one physical album purchase.

  • I actually added some of the recs to my bookwyrm, which I did not expect

Bobby “Bobbo” McMann may be new to Seattle, but he is absolutely not new to serving looks. He stepped out of that Kraken-logo-adorned Toyota and the fans (and media, let’s be honest) drew in a collective breath. A simple black turtleneck paired with tuxedo loafers and cargo pants, and a typical hockey player beanie was all it took for me to know he’d be my best dressed of the night– and he was.

Bobby’s Rec: We Breed Lions by Rick Westhead

A raw, honest look at toxic hockey culture and how it came to be. Westhead does an excellent job laying out the facts, interviewing people who experienced everything within this novel, and not sugarcoating. It’s an extremely hard read, but one that every hockey player and fan should read.

  • I blended a 7 day ferment in 2.5% brine of sweet red, habanero, red onion and garlic (the peppers were from our garden) with the juice of one lime today and then strained and bottled it, and it is excellent. I’ve done longer ferments in the past but I think I prefer them greener. The hab/scotch bonnet/ghost/reaper sauce sounds like its gonna be hot as hell. Scotch bonnets are my favorite peppers to work with, and while no-one round bout these parts sells starts, I successfully got peppers from seed this year for the first time so I think I’ll try to grow a batch next season. I’m also drying the lees – they go great on pizza.

  • It’s definitely the case the fediverse requires a lot of specific, technical knowledge to really grasp, and that the onboarding story for new users is pretty confusing, especially since the most significant decision you make (what instance to host your account on) is the first decision you make, before you even see any content. It’s a problem I’ve been thinking about for many years, and still haven’t found a good solution for. Other some bland reassurances that “you’ll get the hang of it eventually,” all I can say is that every time I talk about instances, it feels like the scene from Mean Girls where Lindsay Lohan’s new friends explain the various high school cliques.
