The Unhook browser extension is pretty good, though I needed to add some Ublock rules once in a while. They don’t always update super fast after Youtube adds new addiction triggers.

Beware, I don’t think they support secure SIP (SIP-over-TLS + SRTP) yet. I have dedicated SIP devices and this is a roadblock to me switching to JMP.chat.

Not if you move to a better instance and block .world. There are plenty of far better communities to subscribe to.

At some point it’s 100% valid to throw up one’s hands, block all of .world, and move on.

The threadiverse with a .world-sized hole in it is plenty active with lots of things to read and talk about. As a bonus, you also have fewer irritating interactions with people who haven’t detoxed from corporate social media. After I blocked .world, the average quality of my random interactions noticeably increased.

It’s unfortunate that so many noobs land there, but it is what it is … they either figure it out (thru exposure to threads like this) and switch instances eventually, or they don’t. Either way, the ones who do eventually filter out onto smaller instances arrive with a better understanding of (and appreciation for) how a federated threaded discussion board system functions in practice.

Blocking .world and putting our collective energy into communities elsewhere is the only real option. I took the plunge months ago and I have plenty of stuff to read and plenty of people to chat with. It just wasn’t worth it to me to continue tolerating the vexatious stupidity and poor behavior just for a handful of communities that weren’t yet (at the time) duplicated elsewhere.

Every time anyone from outside .world participates in a .world community, they are helping to entrench the bullshit. We need to be doing the opposite.

The solution is the same now as it was a year ago: stop participating in .world communities and start contributing your energy to the equivalent communities elsewhere. The entire point of federated threaded discussion boards is to be able to route around damage (or dipshits).

ahh okay, I’m already using a newer version, so my acceptance of the Gnomification is “priced in” so to speak.

I did however put in a calendar event repeating every 6 months to check in on Kaidan and see how they’re doing, and once it’s far enough along, I’ll switch and start contributing bug reports and such.

Dino was Gnomed from the very start. Probably not the greatest choice for anyone who dislikes Gnome UX, the problem is there aren’t a lot of fully baked alternatives.

Unfortunately for Linux it seems the non-GTK alternatives are either not as far along, or run in the browser.

Gajim is a daily driver for me, Kaidan isn’t far enough along, and Dino is even more Gnomed from the get-go.

Also there are some good 5825U boxes out there, but it’s still more oomph than you need for seeding.

I don’t know how to do this on AMD boxes but there are tools out there to adjust CPU power limits without undervolting, it uses the chip’s built-in ability to throttle itself. I’ve had to do the reverse on a Dell which limits itself to 0.8GHz on any non-genuine™ power adapter, but in that case I limited the (Intel) CPU’s PL2 (long-term power limit) to 25W rather than its spec 35W to save power. It thus keeps itself throttled below 25W consumption by the CPU.

I’m sorry I can’t be more helpful with names of tools to try, but I just packed up all my gear to head across town, I’ll try to come back and drop some URLs later. I have a little 5750GE box so I’m interested in whatever the solution turns out to be.
