  • Before this year, I was absolutely anti-gun. I’m a teacher, and it chills me that every time I enter a classroom I think “how the hell am I going to get these kids out of here if shit goes down”. That’s how I start my Monday’s.

Owning a gun at home is statistically more dangerous to you or someone you love than to an intruder.

Most school shooters are taken down by unarmed teachers who work together.

But we aren’t facing intruders or school shooters. We are facing the proud boys, Jan6ers, and now the federal government. I normally don’t believe in violence and weapons either, but the context has changed and now we cannot rely on promises of public officials to keep us safe. We cannot rely on the police to keep us safe (as if we could before). We cannot rely on any market force to keep us safe.

Only we can keep us safe. This shit is getting real, and for those of us who are most likely staring down the barrel of a fascists gun, we can’t just let that happen.

I hate that this is the reality.

I should never have to consider these things.

But in America, every conservative and their mom is carrying, and we in the cities have been complacent. Obviously you are not from America. You don’t understand the sheer amount of guns here. Sadly it’s creating a feedback loop and to sit unarmed is to be a sitting duck in a civil war/ genocide situation.

The time for the idealism of pacifism is done. If you are neutral you are on the side of the oppressor.

  • 75% in fact!

Full disclosure, I’m a Seattle born beer enjoyed so I mainly drink microbrews, or what some folks have told me is “fancy beer”.

My parents moved to the PNW from California in the 80s, and they were amazed at the sheer amount of options. Back then it really was just Bud, Coors, and PBR, but even back then the microbrew scene was budding in Portland and Seattle. My dad would tell me how when they would go back to visit old friends in California, it was either amazing wine of shit beer. People’s minds were blown when they would bring some stuff down from up north to the party.

  • Also let’s be frank, it’s a class divide. Boomers had a huge leg up, and then those who amassed great wealth are the ones we see in power making decisions that close doors to the younger generations.

But back to my point, of course those who have had 60+ years to amass and invest wealth are going to be richer, especially when they had something to invest at the start.

I think when we consider that Gen Z men are running to the right, we should rethink boomers as a scapegoat. It’s not the boomers. It’s the rich and the Andrew Tates of the world who are in the boxing ring.

Like I could probably take down a random boomer, but a billionaire could hire Mike Tyson and I’d be fucked in the ring.

  • I said

Once I saw this guy on a bridge about to jump. I said, “Don’t do it!” He said, “Nobody loves me.” I said, “God loves you. Do you believe in God?”

He said, “Yes.” I said, “Are you a Christian or a Jew?” He said, “A Christian.” I said, “Me, too! Protestant or Catholic?” He said, “Protestant.” I said, “Me, too! What franchise?” He said, “Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Baptist or Southern Baptist?” He said, “Northern Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist or Northern Liberal Baptist?”

He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist.” I said, “Me, too! Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region, or Northern Conservative Baptist Eastern Region?” He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region.” I said, “Me, too!”

Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1879, or Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912?" He said, “Northern Conservative Baptist Great Lakes Region Council of 1912.” I said, “Die, heretic!” And I pushed him over

  • I’m trying to take a cue from Trevor Noah (I didn’t like his time on the daily show but I still think he has some good takes):

Read the news only a few times a week. That’s enough to be informed. We created a 24 hours news cycle that makes us more anxious, angry, and scared than we need to be. Live your life, focus on those around you, stop yelling at people on the internet who have made up their mind.

It seems like a good balance of self care and being informed. You have to set boundaries.
