Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•What's an oddly specific 'blessing' / well-wish in your line of work?
11·11 days agoIf it fails the second time, that’s reproducibility.
If it fails randomly then starts working again the next day without any changes, that’s when you get yourself a headache. And it took someone’s wife, a year later, to figure out the failures only happen on Tuesdays.

Programmer Humor@programming.dev•there's mostly only two relentless hardships in programming: networking issues, naming things, and off by one errors.
2·17 days agoThe more you move through the networking stack, the more you start seeing OB1 error potentials.
Many protocols have packet ids starting from (and wrapping back to) 1. Modbus registers start from 1, but stored in memory offset 0.
Packet lengths can either include or exclude the length itself. E.g. packet length 200 in a protocol could either mean the length is followed by 200 bytes of data; or 1 byte containing the length + 199 data; or even 4 bytes length + 196 data (off by four!)
It’s a wild world out there.
Looks more like a panTerabyte
We’ve been writing slop long before the slopmachines were a thing. Where do people think corpospeak came from?

7·29 days ago‘Focus Features’ is the indie distributor responsible for the movie. They are ‘mounting’ a campaign to get the movie nominated in every possible category (‘full awards push’)
They mentioned “scheduled” and “emergency” in the same sentence. Their doublespeak game is strong.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is it creepy when lemmings go digging through post votes to see who voted how on different posts and comments?
4·1 month agoIt has to if you want federated servers. You spin up a server, it needs to know everything it subscribes to.
There is no solution, because it is not a problem. That’s just the nature of a federated system.
If I walk in the park, I risk people taking pictures of me. That’s the thing about parks, they’re public open spaces. The only solution is to stay home.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Do you ever reminisce about an old phone you had in the past?
2·1 month agoThe og Razr was truly a masterpiece. Sitting on a table, it’s vibrations could wake the whole house.
Does that not make them a hard link (pointing to a filesystem node) instead of a symlink (pointing to another filename)?

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Is there a website that can tell you the new names to I guess "classify" people? Like the R word, or the N word or skin color or nationaility? For ex. Is African American still acceptable and so forth

It also can’t read labels on gmaps. Can’t read people’s “nickname” field in contacts (there are so many Roberts). And can’t access or write notes without also requiring access to my emails (hell no).
Those are the three things I use AA for, and it’s objectively worse at every single one of them.

I can assure you the neighbour’s pool also has their fair share of floaters.

Took me way too long trying to figure out how that has anything to do with the topic at hand.
It’s been a while since I’ve seen Drag. I wonder if Drag is okay.
