Representative Jim Jordan (R-OH) lost 20 Republican votes, falling short of the 217 needed to replace former Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA). Following the vote, the House recessed, subject to the call of the chair. Because there was not a speaker, the House could not conduct any legislative business. This was the first floor vote since Representative McCarthy was ousted on October 3 when he failed to get enough votes to retain his leadership position. In that vote, eight Republicans and all Democrats voted in favor of the motion to vacate the chair, the first time in House history members had voted to remove the speaker.
