When I look at comments I see some with upvotes and then some with hearts and upvotes. I don’t see how to heart a comment myself.

Never seen anything like that. Maybe it is something client-specific?
I just use Firefox on my phone.
Looks like just delta: 80 - 1 in your case.
media literacy is dead. god save the next generation of policymakers. jesus christ.
@lexam@lemmy.world I believe Lemmy.world web (which you can access on your phone via Firefox) is styled so that upvotes look like hearts. This can vary depending on custom styles in different communities, eg. if you viewed the same post from my instance the upvotes are styled as carrots. If you’re not logged in, you won’t have the ability to upvote, but you will still see the number of upvotes each comment has—> this may be why you don’t have the option to “heart” a comment, try logging in first. Also, it’s possible the post was locked by a moderator so no one can upvote.
No, the heart is literally the sum of the votes. If a post has 75 upvotes and 25 downvotes, the post will show 50 hearts. It’s just a vote total. Some clients have the option of showing just the total, or showing the separate up/down votes, or showing both.
Hell, in the screenshot the above user posted, you can literally see the number of upvotes (80) next to the 79 hearts. If we can see the 80 upvotes and the numbers don’t match, we already know the hearts aren’t the same as upvotes.
