Why do we need steer by wire again?
Easier for autonomous driving, now why we actually need autonomous driving is the real question when it doesn’t work safety in all situations.
Is it though?
Is it what? Easier? Fuck yeah is it easier.
By wire you just send the same signals as the wheel does, without having to move any unnecessary parts. Its more control, less moving parts, faster and mpre granular response because of thst
For hydraulic pump you have to have fine control motors manage it and you moving the entire system.
Electric pump you have the motors but also the entire steering shaft to now move, including the wheel, and you have the same at a distance problems as before.
The first is proper control, the other two really isn’t as its like steering with long poles.
None of that sounds easier. No one has used hydraulic pumps for years.
What, spinning the steering wheel, which is what both electric and hydraulic pumps (which are the only common options for modern cars) would have to do when beingdriven autonomously, that is easier?
You’ll need to define exactly what you thing is easier and supports autonomous driving.
Neither are easier
There are clearly difficulty levels with the two options, drive by wire and tge other being electric or hydraulic.
The former has been working for years, doesn’t spin the steering wheel while its being driven autonomously. It allows for fine control, isn’t coupled to the steering wheel turns.
The later spins the wheel which is a huge issue, works a step removed so lacks control and timing, is coupled to the speed of the steering wheel and requires more power consumption.
Its pretty obvious which is the terrible solution for autonomous driving, its not even close
I don’t know, I’m just waiting for Bluetooth steering.
Less cost probably
So you can steer it with a ps4 controller?
With lots of trial and error in a $100k+ car
You don’t but it can help with packaging since you don’t need a shaft from the rack to the wheel (which is on different sides depending on region). It also means you can have different steering ratios for different situations. You can have a fast ratio while parking and a slow one on the highway. If you have automated driving, the wheel doesn’t need to turn when the car turns. Although I think all cars with any kind of autonomous driving still turn the wheel.
We solved that problem 20 years ago with variable steering ratios.
