Hello everyone,
I have discovered SimpleX Chat (nothing to do with XChat or HexChat, or the favorite letter of some dumb billionaire), and it appears being a legit good effort at providing good privacy while retaining “mainstream” usability.
And it has been audited (by one company so far, it seems).
The only concern I have is with regards to battery life (given that it has to maintain roughly as many open connections as you have contacts, AFAICT).
Has anyone here used it? Any opinion?
I discovered and installed it a long time ago, but it won’t run on my SO’s old phone and I haven’t been able to convince anyone else I know to help me test it. So, I love the concept but can’t vouch for its usability. Widespread user adoption is always an issue with mew privacy or security tech.

I find it weird and sad that they only announce their mobile apps on the main page. You’d have to go to their Github and only then see that they also have a desktop client. I personally don’t mind it being terminal-only, but I see how people could have an issue with there being no GUI. I just find it disrespectful. I don’t personally use it (I am mostly on IRC and XMPP), but this just caught my attention.
Well the desktop gui is still in beta (literally less than a week old, iirc). So I wouldn’t expect it being on the website until it’s fully functional. (And it’s a GUI desktop client now)
Update: The frontpage now has a line that says “Get SimpleX desktop app”, above various mobile app stores links. Have to head to downloads page, still on the website itself, for desktop, mobile and terminal options.

Does the app have the ability to send uncompressed videos/files?
I miss that feature from Telegram when I use Signal
Afaik yes but it’s not as convenient. (You’re sending a file, which the recipient downloads, instead of a video as a chat-item-thing). I’m not 100% sure on this though

Use jami instead
Ooh, I forgot, I tried Jami, back when it was called Ring. Probably has changed since, I’ll give it another go.
Edit: I did, and here is what it looks like:
Not saying I’m gonna uninstall it right away, but I am not too sure what the only button says (I assume “start a chat” or something - it doesn’t scroll), and that doesn’t bode well for the rest… 🙃
It’s pretty good and I use it a fair amount. Sometimes messages don’t order correctly when they are sent and your client is off, so be sure to reply to the messages you are talking about so the order is clear. I prefer Briar, but it doesn’t work for some people due to a lack of iPhone app.
We don’t need more chat apps. We need less.
I disagree, what we really need is for these chat apps to use an open protocol
Totally agree. All of the comments in this thread are like “why not ____?”. I can’t event get a critical mass of contacts to use Signal. Adding more and more messaging apps just fractures people even more.

Why not delta chat

Have you used DC?
Matrix is better
It’s just not the same thing… Matrix was designed on the on irc model, it’s meant for “room” conversations at heart. SimpleX, from what I can tell, is much closer to Tox: one to one conversations mainly, and support for groups.
… So, is no one going to point out that, “simplex” is also the latter half of “herpes simplex”? 🤢🤦🏼♂️
edit: downvote all you want (reddit habits are hard to break, it seems), but the usage of Simplex in commercial product lines seems to have fallen out of favor by the mid-1900s… Conspicuously similar to the timing of said STI rampaging through the US population. Couldn’t possibly be related, though. (see: link below)
There’s many things named simplex… Doesn’t have to relate to Herpes: https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Simplex_(disambiguation)

“Bro”, you’re missing the point entirely, cupcake, and your reflexive routine of sophomoric escalation only further underlines the reddit habit observation. Name your silly thing whatever you want, let the market decide if it wants to use something akin to herpes. Your weepy, whinging mouth already belies your choice.
