It’s fine to turn your head if you make sure you’re not going to hit something in front, and keep the backwards check short in time. I do it all the time at high speeds. Some practice is needed to make sure you don’t accidentally swerve when doing it.

If you can avoid “Rapidly switching”, that’s one less thing to worry about. A rear view is long overdue. Subtle eyeball movement is much more efficient than twisting your entire head.
