I will say, banning someone doesn’t really stop them from viewing the community; it only prevents them from posting comments. I don’t often ban and usually try to communicate directly with people when I think they’re simply misguided. When I do ban or moderate in general, it’s to protect the community rather than punish any user. I don’t want to expose users to bigots or toxic people that won’t listen, and I put their safety over a single user’s posting privileges.
