I liked it. It was very much what I expected from a Zach Cregger movie. Felt a bit like he wanted to make a movie and Sony made him tie it into Resident Evil, though. The way the zambonis work in this felt more like Inside. But still. Good movie.

I’m going to choose to believe there’s no typo in this and you and I accidentally watched two VERY different horror movies

I liked it. It was fun, lots of background IP references (and mid ground, and foreground). It was silly, full of body horror, felt like almost all hope was lost the whole time.

    And I LOVED the ending.

It was good. 6/10 imo. His bite felt pretty low-stakes – just a time bomb that’s going to activate whenever it’s convenient for the plot. There’s a vague sense of urgency once he’s bitten, but without knowing even roughly how long it takes for someone to turn (it seems like “hours”, but that’s about it), I pretty quickly lost my suspension of disbelief that he’s really “running out of time” until he’s literally in the hospital and we really see it going off the rails.

Overall, the protagonist feels grounded, although saying “fuck fuck fuck” over and over got old after a while and started feeling less like funny, relatable grounding and more like a “please laugh” button.

My biggest critique might be that the city felt completely underwhelming to me. He gets in with what basically amounts to an actual RE protag in terms of skill (a hilarious lampshade which I have to admit was my favorite part of the movie) who dies pretty much 30 seconds after she exits their car. So given a random farmyard outside of town nearly killed him multiple times and given the authentic video game protag gets brutally murdered so quickly, I really expected the walk from that point to the hospital (a long way) to be really intense and nail-biting.

It sort of starts out that way until the protag escapes into the sewers, and imo it shits the bed from there until the hospital. In the sewer, he finds a fucking gigantic man and tries to approach him until mutated rats swarm out of the man’s stomach. There’s no reason for this to have happened (I think the giant man was even sitting in a complete dead-end); protag being more braindead than even horror-movie-suspension-of-disbelief levels just for the sake of a setpiece. Then the protag surfaces, and he’s still at least several blocks away from the hospital. He’s walking down the street, and all of a sudden, zombies from the rooftops start throwing themselves off toward him. This is neat, but for no reason at all, there are dozens of the fuckers wandering the roofs and not one alive chasing him down this gigantic fucking avenue cutting through the city.

And then cut to him at the hospital.
