Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•Men can take their shirts off for hot days and exercise. Why can't women do the same in 2025?English
93·3 months agoThey also don’t want to be photographed and end up with their tits all over social media. Places where this used to be routine (European beaches and so on) there is a lot less of this than 30 years ago. Another thing mobiles phones and social media have made worse

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•What do you think about the concept of lesser evil? (i.e. when faced with selecting from two immoral options, the less immoral one should be chosen.)English
81·3 months agoObviously true? In real life I’ve found it’s often worth doing a bit of thinking / effort to find a third option though. Not always possible though - like when voting - though I don’t think picking the least worst (imho) option when it comes to political representation is immoral
I’m sorry to say that I think you’re stuck while the father is being so useless. If his view is that his daughters role in life is to moon about until some guy comes along to take care of her, and she is also of the same view, then I think the best you can do is to be supportive of anything that gets her out of the house (including useless studies) and exposed to more of the world and different world views. Hopefully she’ll come to her senses and husband can then support her in her new choices. You have the sympathy of a random internet stranger.
Father of a daughter here. I think your husbands position is deplorable. I want the best for my daughter, and education gives her choices. It sets her up to be self reliant. If she chooses to go trad wife (can’t see it) then that’s her look out, but at least she’ll be to change her mind if she wants to. It’s much harder work to get these choices back in later life - get them now!

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•If I invented a shirt that caused cameras to be damaged when filmed/photographed, would I be committing a crime by wearing the shirt at events with cameras?English
14·4 months agoI think it depends on whether it’s active or passive. Active - e.g. a laser that damages a camera sensor, then yes, your device is actively damaging someone else’s camera - deliberate property damage. Passive - e.g. reflective strips so the exposure is bad, a pattern that is hard to focus on or similar- that’s fine - camera owner is making a decision to expose their gear to the environment. Even if, say, it’s a changing pattern that deceives the autofocus into working constantly (no, I don’t know exactly how that would work, but it’s the best I can think of at short notice) so it wears out faster.

Public Transport@slrpnk.net•TIL there is a law called Marchetti's Constant. Humans only tolerate commutes of less than ~1 hour. Housing outside that limit will fail.English
4·4 months agoI guess it’s ‘on average’ - I, for example, have managed to have a sub 30 min commute for most of my 20+ years career, and that on public transport or by bike. It’s been mostly by accident rather than design, but it’s been a massive blessing.
