Canada@lemmy.ca•Residents of #canada, would you be in favour of your province or territory abolishing annual clock changes and moving to a consistent, year round time?
2·1 day agoAdd some complications by adding clients in Europe.
They also do standard/summer time, but they change at a different time of the year than North Americans!

2·1 day agoMotorists are more likely to die in collisions, but cyclists and pedestrians are not; and by a nearly equal amount. So maybe take active or public transit for a week or two following the time change. It will help with reducing heart attacks too.

2·1 day agoWhere in a time zone do you lock the solar noon/nadir too? That’s a (usually) 30 to 60 minute variation depending on the size of the zone.
The entire reason standardixed time began to exists, was the extreme difficulty in time deferences between cities that could now be travelled between in short order by train (specifically Ozford and London, which were 5 minutes apart).
Any longitudinal travel would quickly change your time! Talk about scheduling nightmares. Late for a meeting in Toronto because you called from Ottawa. A 10 minute train ride is 9 minutes in one direction and 11 the other!

4·4 days agoThe point is the floors were illegally built, and are subject to destruction regardless if a fine is imposed or not.
I’m just offering seizure as an alternative to destruction.

131·4 days agoSince the floors are ALREADY built, I’d like to propose an alternative. Floors 11 and 12 are now social housing units, owned by the city.

Can you suggest any resources?
Probably unrelated to geography, but rather sub-national culture(s), provincial/territorial public health initiatives, and provincial discrepancies in health care delivery.
Also odd that OP said QC is projected to have the highest rate, when NS, NL and NU are higher. Or why BC was stated lowest when there is a BIG drop in rates for YT

3·9 days agoI’m definitely under 105.
I’m aware of the cognitive dissidence, but I can still believe social media should be banned (or at least banned in most of it’s current forms) while still using it.
I am also reliant on a personal automobile while simultaneously believing people should not have to be reliant on personal automobiles.

3·10 days agoMontreal’s arrodissement system/controls also greatly benefited it’s cycling growth.
Though the suburbs that are part of la ville de Montréal are gerenally less cars brained than suburbs that are not part of la vdm. So that is probably a big factor. That said, the biggest suburbs (and the ones directly north and south of la vdm) are putting big effort into their active and public transit; so maybe not.

2·11 days agoNot forgotten. Intentionality burried. The individuals and unit were not recognized until a ddcade later in 2002.
That said, I can understand the the rationale behind trying to obfuscate it. Explaining why peacekeepers are killing people on the heels of the Somolia affair is a tough go.

So here’s the thing. The USA has been using the events of 11/09/2001 as a casus belli liberally since the event. International law has still not caught up to this decision, so they continue to work in this neat little grey area.
Is it right? Nope.
Is it bullshit that a security council member changed International Law unilaterally? Yup.
Is it legal? So far, yes.

Valid opinion, I’d be interested to see if there is some data to confirm or deny it. It’s different than my experiences, but I did live and drive there, so obviously it comes with a bias.

Incorrect. Montréal has a low collision frequency and low serious injury and fatal collision rate compared to most the country/contient.

Raised crosswalks weren’t too common in most burroughs of Montréal when I left, but alternative road surfaces for slower zones we’re gaining popularity.
This has existed since at least the 1800s, and the managerial crisis in a big way. It just feels more acute with apps, but it is still just policy without accountability. I recommend the Unaccountability Machine for further reading.
We also know what the solution is. We’ve always known. You know it in your heart right now. The solution is localisation and community building. But that comes with comfort costs that we have decided are to much to bear. It comes with inequality between communities that we refuse to tax though land value instead of property value. It comes with risk sharing with others. It comes with comparing yourself, your family, your community, and your nation not to others; but to ourselves 1, 5, 10, 100 years ago.
