I viciously “edit” the internet as much as I can. I block toxic social networks and have deleted any accounts I had on them. There’s a Firefox plugin that lets you individually block sites in search results so you reduce scraper garbage SEO sites in your results. PiHole, uBlock, and whatever else that is available to block ads, tracking, etc. “-ai” when searching. Use SearXNG or non-big data search tools when able.

It sucks. It takes work to enjoy what used to be better a decade ago, but let’s face it it’s been steadily downhill since ‘10 or so. I truly miss the “old” web. 7/10. Good job, good family. Just frustrating that it took a lot of stress and worry to get here, especially financially. Finally doing well but all of that is tempered by saving as much as possible due to basically having been poor up until about a decade ago, so even though we’re doing ok it’s kinda hard to enjoy because all of it goes to catching up for not having money for so long. Really sobering to understand that most people will never have the chance to “catch up.”

I like them. Got the whole house set up with it. Yeah, big corp IT gear will have security risks. I used PoE setups to not need to run electrical to the WAPs, used an AirMax directional antenna to get wifi at an outbuilding without needing to run cable or a powerful outdoor WAP for mesh or whatever broadcasting my wifi all over the neighborhood. Works great, stable, a bit fiddly to set up but once it’s set up it’s golden. I recommend buying used off ebay for all gear except the cloud key controller.

Do you have any evidence that industrial manufacturers are sourcing Pi 5’s as controllers of choice? I think most manufacturers would use proprietary or purpose built controllers meeting required durability needs.
