10·20 days agoMy girlfriends grandma is 90 and she rides her e-bike almost daily. But we have some bike lanes and a grocery store is nearby.

1·22 days agoThat’s so unfair and obviously not true. They do so much.
They consume. Like a lot. They keep repeating: we can’t really do anything about it. That takes at least some effort. They ignore reality so hard, which can’t be easy at this point.
Guess what? We wont get it. It will just get worse and worse.
There is only one left and one center-left party in the Knesset and together they have 9 seats out of 60.

That’s true. I was more talking about regular people defending such behaviour.
Just because a system is designed a certain (amoral) way, doesn’t mean you HAVE to use it in that way.
Trump and many others may think it’s smart to not pay taxes because of the immediate advantage of having more money. But I’d argue, it’s actually a stupid thing to do. Especially for wealthy people. They profit more from government services like a well equiped police force, good infrastructure, health services that keep their employees healthy, etc. They are just to stupid or shortsighted to factor all variables in.
Also I think societal norms and individual identity plays a big role in such decisions. I mean, why are you on lemmy and not on reddit? Isn’t it smarter to use reddit since there is more content, more users who read your comments? Maybe reddit just banned you and you have no viable alternative. But there is also the possibility that you are aware of the shortcomings of reddit and arrived at the decision that it’s actually smarter to use lemmy.
In the end, it’s your descision who you want to be. Do you want to be they guy who doesn’t pay taxes and brags about it? Or the guy who thinks it’s so smart to bribe the president? Do you want to be the guy who reads bot comments on reddit all day and gobbles up their rage bait? Even if society deems certain descisons as smart, they are very often not.
It isn’t their fault this was the smart thing to do.
Oh my, the shit
Americanspeople say. Reminded me of this.
Just some ideas:
- try deprogramming one of your MAGA relatives
- boycott the big evil corporations
- eat less meat, drive your car less
- VOTE in every election
- involve yourself in your community
- help in local election campains
- maybe even involve yourself with a new local chapter of DSA? (I don’t know how it works in the US on a local level)
- complain
- If you’re up to it, throw your sabot
When we say American, we don’t mean every single American. We speak of overall societal tendencies. And yes, you live in a society. You are part of it. I’m sure you know, but the first step to overcoming a problem is to identify it.
Americans are like fish who don’t know what water is.
Elbows up, Canada! I’m really happy to see that there is at least one nation that pushes back.
I only wish the European Commission would take note and grow some balls.

If I had to take a guess what the root cause is, I’d say the problem lies in the difference between the culturally transported image of reality (propaganda, advertisement, algorithmic bubbles etc) and the longing for a life according to human nature (community, good food, sense of belonging and usefulness, spiritual fulfillment etc)
Well, they enjoy beeing cruel, we not so much. But they love their stuff more than their family members.
Almost every day I have a fight with my gf over her Amazon account. I told her we can not proceed with a meaningful relationship if she doesn’t cancel it. Am I the crazy one?
