2·1 month agoHow shibboleth came to mean password or dog whistle instead of an ear of wheat is from a pretty dark bible story:
And the Gileadites took the passages of Jordan before the Ephraimites: and it was so, that when those Ephraimites which were escaped said, Let me go over; that the men of Gilead said unto him, Art thou an Ephraimite? If he said, Nay; Then said they unto him, Say now Shibboleth: and he said Sibboleth: for he could not frame to pronounce it right. Then they took him, and slew him at the passages of Jordan: and there fell at that time of the Ephraimites forty and two thousand.

This seems like the natural way to do it. Before agriculture our meals weren’t guaranteed and we had fewer options for preservation so you might as well eat it all when you got the chance.

8·4 months agoChipotle is another one. The tl phoneme is a good clue that it’s a Nahuatl word since it’s uncommon in European languages. That also means the t is at the start of the third syllable rather than the end of the second, chi-po-tle
