Spiders are extremely fascinating and I wish more people would take an interest in them. They are mostly harmless and fear of them is irrational and illogical.

They are such a diverse group and have so many important functions in nature. There are some really cool ones out there like the lynx spiders or garden orb weavers like Argiope argentata. They are so fun to watch catch insects and go about their little spider lives. They are just so fucking cool.

Especially the green lynx spider ladies. They are my absolute favorite and such little badasses :)

My yard backs up to a canyon, so I have all kinds of critters running around. The rabbits are easy to keep out with a chickenwire fence. I grow marigolds and green leafy plants to attract green lynx spiders. The spider gal last year put in a lot of work protecting my garden. It’s also attracted a few mantises here and there, which is helpful.

Rats are a major problem for my tomatoes. I grow the tomatoes in an Earth Box, so I used green fencing that the rats couldn’t get through and just wrapped it around the whole thing. Thankfully, this year should have fewer rats because the neighbors got rid of their giant bird of paradise where they were nesting. There is also no pile of wood between the houses, another nesting place.

This past weekend was the annual book crawl in my city, also celebrating Independent Bookstore Day. I visited 15 bookstores on Saturday and won a championship mug. I was the first grand price winner for the store I finished at, yay! It’s the 4th mug I’ve won out of 5 years participating. I bought way more books than I intended but who can say no to $2 Star Trek books? Not this lady!

Yeah, for me it’s really just wow that I play, otherwise I’m typically reading. I tried with Ubuntu, couldn’t get it going. I was looking at Bazzite I think it’s called, but there was some yellow flag about my video card and I was just kind of over it that day. I’ll be giving it another try one of these days lol

I think it was Wine and Lutris that I tried, but just could not get Blizzard going. It either stuck on updating or froze entirely at startup. I plan on trying it again because I would 100% love to switch, it’s just wow that’s the sticking point for me.

I’m not disagreeing that was your experience but that was not my experience. I recently tried to switch to Linux but I could not get the one game I actually play to work, the game is World of Warcraft. I mentioned it in a comment and one dude basically called me an idiot because even his “tech illiterate mom could get it to work”.

The short answer: sexism and money

The long answer:

Sexism: Women’s clothing is seen from an aesthetic view and not a utility view. Women’s pockets give us independence and since women were seen as property for so long, we did not need pockets to hold our items. Men’s clothing is about utility and practicality because men need to hold important items in their day to day. Women’s clothing is seen as just about fashion because women just want to be pretty, which reflects how some view women’s place in the world “be pretty, attract man, find husband, make babies”. Fewer pockets means women have to carry more with our hands which leads to less freedom of movement and less independence.

Money: Fashion companies make tens of billions selling women purses. If women had real pockets, we may not need purses. This is also why fast fashion is aimed at women, our clothing is of lesser quality so we are required to buy clothing more frequently. Women’s clothes are considered a loss leader to sell more cheap accessories.

The thing is, instead of arguing that women don’t really want pockets, you should listen and acknowledge what we are asking for. Times are changing, pockets are becoming larger in women’s clothes because women are demanding them, because we are being more selective and purchasing the few options with pockets that we have. Not as many companies are taking advantage of that ask because they want to sell purses, but the change is happening. You should also be advocating for that change.

The book I linked to above goes into great detail about the history of pockets in general, then provides information on why women’s pockets not only don’t exist as they should, but have actually been taken away from us as we gained independence (during WW2 when women had to work because men were fighting, women’s clothing had more pockets). I disagree. Women’s pants with pockets will sell just as well as, if not better than, women’s pants with fake pockets because at the end of the day, there is no difference in pants with vs without except in very limited cases like specific styles of business attire. The pants will sell because women want to wear pants and we buy pants available to us.

There is no good reason at all for fake pockets to even exist. These companies do this so they can force women to buy purses, an extra item that causes women to spend more money. It’s sexism. That’s all there is to it.

I highly recommend a book called Pockets: An Intimate History of How We Keep Things Close by Hannah Carlson. Women have been denied pockets for centuries and business today are just continuing that.

Yeah, I mean it would be nice for folks to read the rules, but as long as they don’t get nasty when being asked to not comment, it’s not an issue. From what I see hanging out there, it doesn’t seem to be a big deal most of the time. Mods just say their thing and the convo moves on. If the community were marked as private, many women, myself included, likely never would have found that space.

Gym clothes specifically are rough for me because I can’t do all the high waisted stuff. The tight fit presses against an old surgery scar of mine and causes really painful cramping. Finding gym clothes can be so much fun! /s

Just buy bigger pants?

This doesn’t actually solve the issue. Buying bigger pants means the waist doesn’t fit, so you have to wear a belt. Which is fine. But when I wear pants with a waist that is too big, it bunches in places and is uncomfortable when I sit down and lean back. It can also cause weird gapping in the waistband that leaves underwear exposed for everyone to see.

This is why I don’t just “buy men’s pants and wear a belt”, like I’ve been told to do over and over again. Men’s clothes don’t fit my body and the excess fabric bunches causing uncomfortable pressure points on my back and waist. I already have enough back issues, I don’t want pants that cause even more.

The best solution is to give women more options. I know it’s “the trend” for women to wear tight fitting clothes, however, there are significant number of women that don’t like all of our clothes to be tight. Clothing companies would still make money, but they prefer to make cheap fast fashion garbage that falls apart quickly and forces women to buy clothes more often. Instead women get told that we only want to wear tight clothes because we want to be sexy and we since have no pockets we have to buy purses or we get told we look frumpy and gross in baggy clothes.

I think it’s fine that people accidentally comment and mods have to do the extra work, it allows the community to stay open for women to be able to find. That was how I found it.

The easiest solution is, when a man gets told that it’s a space for women, he can just say “Oops, sorry about that” and move on, that is how most men respond when asked to not comment there. Its the men who have awful reactions and get argumentative that since a post came up in all, they should be allowed to join and comment whenever they want. Which is just silly.

lol Yeah it happens. They don’t so much defend them, more argue with women that it’s our fault for buying pants with small pockets, even though there aren’t many options. Or since women like our pants so tight, pockets would look wrong to stuff them full, when all we want is to be able to carry a few items like ID, credit card, and a small amount of cash. And there is always someone who links to a search for “women’s pants deep pockets” on websites like Old Navy or The Gap thrown around like that actually means those pants have deep pockets, when they frequently have those useless half pockets. Or that women should just wear men’s pants even though they don’t fit women’s bodies and are uncomfortable.

It’s a misunderstanding of what women are actually asking for, so instead of admitting they don’t understand, they double down and argue with women that we don’t really want that 🤷‍♀️
