That isn’t how it works though. Nobody is collecting billions in wages. They receive stock which isn’t counted as taxable income until sold.

they’re basically embargo’d by most of the world
A big portion of the world isn’t aligned with the US and has no embargo on Russia. Like we’re talking almost everything except US / Western Europe / Australia. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/International_sanctions_during_the_Russian_invasion_of_Ukraine#/media/File:Russian-list-of-unfriendly-countries.svg
weird, my single mom driving beaters could afford short driving trips (2 hours is short to me.) We did mostly go to a campground that was less than 15 minutes drive away from home though.
We heavily used food pantries though, literally every single week. No air conditioning, bunny ears on our simple tv, school bus rides to school. We even went a couple years without hot water when our hot water heater broke down just boiling water on the stove.
Everyone’s experience is different though. Though I was in one of the poorest families in my hometown. None of my aunts, uncles or parents own their own home today and they’re 50s and 60s now. The sacrifices of growing up in a wealthy middle class town will enable me to buy a house. Going to see an open house in 35 minutes!
Campgrounds are everywhere and one in under a 2 hour drive is very doable throughout your whole life for a family vacation. You won’t lose access to that.
Housing costs will swing back. We’re around the point where we were in the last housing market crash. Prices are at the edge of affordability for the middle class. Mortgages are higher than what can be rented. One market course correction and a ton of people lose their houses and the market collapses again.
They’re doing everything they can to try and stop the collapse but homes are still increasing in price way more quickly than wages. Just a matter of time.
People who work full-time jobs used to be middle class. Living wages, affordable housing, yearly vacations, etc.
When?
Do you call camping in a campground a “family vacation” ? because that’s as far as my family had growing up in a pensioned job. We never could afford air travel, fancy new TVs, new cars… our house was very basic, we always drove beaters, we spent years without one thing or another to make it work.
This isn’t the current generation, or the last one, this was even earlier.
Just trying to understand when this idea that anybody in any job could have the white picket fence and world class quality of life was somehow a reality. I don’t think that’s ever been the case for the poorest full time workers or even the bottom 50%.
Jesus christ these headlines mislead everything.
They were using machine learning to try and figure out what people were buying. Machine learning has lots of errors until you train it. The “hundreds of workers” were training it by telling it what each thing was. E.g. it was creating training data for it to learn from.
The goal was to train ML enough so that humans were rarely necessary, obviously.
Innovation is part of the executive buzzword bingo board for all announcements.
It doesn’t actually mean anything to these people. The only thing that has weight is what will enrich the wealth of the ownership class (shareholders.)
The article implies the swat team was sent due to an armed carjacking that morning. Someone got a warrant for search and seizure based on geolocation results from the airpods and they assumed the carjackers would be hanging out at this address.
It’s a rental home. Nothing is mentioned about the identity of the owner of the home. After looking up the house on zillow though it’s about 113k. It’s a dead end street surrounded by homes that are valued under 100k. I didn’t realize that federal minimum wage would be enough to pay a mortgage in 2024, but apparently it is possible. This isn’t super relevant other than the fact i’m looking at buying a house near Boston and I did a double take that a home exists in this price range and isn’t in a trailer park. 113k here won’t even buy you a parking spot.
After looking up the address it looks like a group of juveniles were involved with the carjacking so names are impossible to find. The most bizzare thing though is that a couple hours after the carjacking the car was picked up 3.5 miles / an 8 minute drive from the house in wylin court with the suspects bailing from the car and the cops arresting them… I wonder when the swatting happened at 630pm who they thought they would find?
Fun fact, the murder rate in St Louis per capita is the 7th highest in the world, after six cities in Mexico. #1 in the US. 87.83 per 100k. https://www.statista.com/statistics/243797/ranking-of-the-most-dangerous-cities-in-the-world-by-murder-rate-per-capita/
I’m not justifying anything. I learned a lot that I never knew about St Louis MO and holy fuck is it rough.
If you think biscuit is bad… you should try pan.
I’ve tried explaining the various English denominations of various bread items to Spanish speaking people and it’s just not easy. Roll, bun, loaf, baguette, brioche, pita, ciabatta, soda bread, brown bread, rye… it’s all just pan.
I mean sure I guess… but brave as a browser is atrocious. I don’t trust their bullshit at all.
After all who doesn’t want a crypto wallet in their browser? that’s the safest place for it right?
Just insane that a country can kill hundreds of thousands of it’s neighbors and take their land while being protected by a country decrying the same action by another country.
This isn’t going to solve any problems for the Israelis. They’ll just be a bigger target for the middle east. What happens when the Palestinian kids clinging to life grow up in neighboring countries? Do they think they won’t find more rockets and conduct more attacks? What will Israel do when the attacks come from Jordan or Egypt? invade those countries too?
Don’t forget heating and cooling too. There’s a ton of things that are necessary to operate while the vehicle is in motion and should never be delegated to a touchscreen.
I’m fine with touchscreens for in car entertainment for the back seats and maybe a passenger one with the appropriate shutter technology to block the driver’s view. None of those things are important for vehicle safety… but if there is a speaker that the passengers can control there needs to be a mute button for the driver to turn that shit off too :)
You think no one will pick up the old code and work on it?
You think the original devs won’t consider going back at it through a means that is anonymous and minimizes their risk?
I’ve never ever seen a platform with an emulator lose the emulator without someone eventually filling the void. The interest is there. More people than ever can code.
The owner who cared is dead. The ones who have control now are more interested in profits than trying to be good.
Wendy’s used to be the pioneer of the value menu too.
THEY get something given to them!??!? NO WAY, NOT UNLESS ITS FOR ME TOO
-Sincerely, dumb people who can’t put themselves in anyone elses shoes. The world revolves around their life experience and nothing else.
This asshole is just exercising his options to take money from the same moderators that were up in arms over his changes last year. Make no mistake, this is Spez’s revenge.
I really hope this whole thing backfires on reddit, but I think the reality is that it will further enshittify until it’s profitable, and it’s already so big it’s unlikely to fail.
Lemmy just isn’t a replacement and I think the nature of lemmy will stop it from ever being one unless someone throws godlike resources at one giant instance that federates with basically nobody.
ML can be applied in a great number of ways. One such way could be content moderation, especially detecting people who use alternate accounts to reply to their own content or manipulate votes etc.
By including IP addresses with the comments they could correlate who said what where and better learn how to detect similar posting styles despite deliberate attempts to appear to be someone else.
It’s a legitimate use case. Not sure about the legality… but I doubt google or reddit would ever acknowledge what data is included unless they believed liability was minimal. So far they haven’t acknowledged anything beyond the deal existing afaik.
Today this article popped up about sanctioning china because they are supplying russian arms manufacturers with resources: https://www.theguardian.com/us-news/2024/apr/26/antony-blinken-beijing-visiit-china-us-relations-foreign-minister-wang-yi
A quick google search pulls up dozens of articles about how China is helping the Russian war effort…
India however doesn’t supply arms, but instead buys them from Russia. Instead India is buying Russia’s oil, funding their war effort in another way. India is buying 13x the amount of oil they would normally buy from Russia pre-war. https://www.cnn.com/2024/02/19/europe/russia-oil-india-shadow-fleet-cmd-intl/index.html
I don’t see China truly reducing their war supplies to China, nor do I see India calling off their oil deal. Unless Russia is actually cut off they’re just going to keep getting supplies.
