Web Development@programming.dev•AI coding tools are quietly atrophying our skills, and aviation figured this out 30 years ago
2·5 days agoTools can be useful well before they’re taken for granted. Art software was always a hot mess. 3D software’s still a hot mess. People nonetheless find immense utility in these programs.
This tech would be a non-issue if it didn’t actually work. Chatbots can code now, and they’re good enough that I’ve seen critics fixate on maintainability, which is about as high-level as complaints could be. The big fat datacenter versions have caused sharp divisions by reimplementing open-source projects, using completely different structure in other languages entirely. The offline laptop versions are only months behind. Shit is getting weird in this house.

2·5 days agoI was taught with compilers you couldn’t trust. The old buggy ones that needed babysitting still beat doing everything by hand.
Even when they worked, you were expected to know assembly for inline optimizations, and my assembly education was surely terrible compared to my teachers’. That gap was okay, because things usually worked out. The point was using the higher-level tools to get more done without sweating every last detail.

44·10 days agoOh, that’s easy: that summary is nonsense. Several of those bullet points are the polar opposite of things I’ve said. Compare an actual comment. Or an assessment of that posthumous Val Kilmer movie. Or this argument about typical reporting, which is quite close to the comment I was making in Fuck_AI when I was notified of this bizarre accusation.
Some of these snippy bullet points are eye-rolling misunderstandings of the debate. “CGI for dummies” is a defense. I’m speaking to people who insist AI disqualifies a text from being art, as if this is the one tool immune to human intent. I am pointing out it’s just a way to use imagery to convey an idea.
If you use this tool to guide moderation decisions, you should stop, because it has failed you.

25·10 days agoAnd yet, when you call for murder, the people you’re calling to murder will have entirely unsurprising responses. When those people are in charge of websites, you don’t get to be on those websites anymore. Regardless of your moral righteousness, you have to temper your calls to action, if you want to avoid that blindingly obvious result.

That’s funny. I am the lone voice routinely pushing back in Fuck_AI@Lemmy.world, and I caught shit for posting an okay-but-interesting AI-rendered short film to Cyberpunk@lemmy.zip. So far as I know I’ve never interacted with this mod, and it looks like they saw ‘threatening to murder moderators will get moderated’ as cause for overzealous moderation.

For the murder fantasies.

Asklemmy@lemmy.ml•At some point AI companies are going to have to charge real money to make a profit from their services. What do you think that amount would be and why?
6·14 days agoThere are other ways it might work, like if there is a method of compression that is discovered that reduces the necessary RAM and Compute needs by 2-3 orders of magnitude. So models that are considered very large today (100-300 billion params at full quality) might be able to run effectively on a single 32GB GPU that costs a few thousand dollars.
You might want to check in on how well distilled / quantized models are doing, compared to gigundo datacenter versions.

12·14 days agoThey’re fucked.
Local models are already winning. Those benchmarked a year behind the biggest of big boys, a year ago. Six months ago they were six months behind. Yesterday Qwen released 3.6 27B and it outperforms 3.5 397B… from February.
Either we’re plateauing toward the asymptotic limit of LLM capabilities, and the endgame runs as well on a toaster as it does on a server - or breakthroughs use big fat models as a glorified search space to be rapidly discarded. Both options point toward neural networks as a lump of algebra that sits on your hard drive and occasionally spins your fans. Remote computing loses, as it basically always must, and the drastically reduced requirements for competing on local software favor clever new competitors who aren’t a bajillion dollars in debt.

23·17 days agoNo. This is not equating two things. This is pointing out you can’t say that shit, about anyone.
‘Death to Nazis and I think you’re Nazis’ will end badly, regardless of anyone’s opinions of the Nazis. Who the [blank] is in “murder all [blank]s” is simply not the issue.
