ADHD@lemmy.world•Recommendations on informative books?English
4·18 days agoIn terms of strategies, I’d recommend Unmasked by Ellie Middleton.
I’m currently half way through reading Scattered Minds by Gabor Maté, which is very much worthy of all the praise it receives.

movies@piefed.social•What's your favourite emotionally devastating movie?
3·18 days agoStrangely these are my favourite kind of films, as there is something cathartic about emerging from an emotional roller coaster. These films have stayed me with long after:
- Irreversible
- 21 Grams
- Never Let Me Go
- Burning
- First Reformed
- The Long Walk

Selfhosted@lemmy.world•Music Assistant 2.7 - Taking over the airwavesEnglish
2·1 month agoThat is correct, it aggregates different providers, and also provides integrations with speakers. In my case, I use Music Assistant to listen to my Navidrome music collection over my home speakers that use Chromecast.

2·1 month agoAre you referring to genre tags? If so, they’re adding that feature in version 2.8.
There is also a Don’t Stop The Music feature, however that relies on functionality from the underlying provider.
The Don’t Stop The Music (DSTM) option can be enabled if a provider is available which supports dynamic tracks (i.e. Apple, Deezer, Spotify, Subsonic, Tidal and YTM). When DSTM is on, radio mode will be automatically enabled when the last track of the queue is reached and if any dynamic tracks can be resolved from one of the providers. The added tracks will be based on the played items in the queue.

Dogs@lemmy.world•The climate paradox of having a dogEnglish
101·3 months agoAs a dog owner, this is something I’ve thought about, and while I should not need to justify my decision to have a dog, I would argue that because we have a dog, my partner and I take less flights, and opt for dog friendly travel holidays by train.

Casual UK@feddit.uk•Why are alcohol-free drinks so expensive? Some fake spirits cost over £25 a bottle!English
6·3 months agoThanks for asking. I do enjoy the taste of beer and wine, and prefer it over the taste of soft drink. Having tried lots of alcohol free beers, I do think they’re very good these days, and I’m a big fan of Botivo.
Alcohol-free wine still has a way to go, I sometimes grab a bottle from the supermarket, and find it quite reasonably priced. It doesn’t taste quite like wine, but for me it tastes better than soft drinks.

Casual UK@feddit.uk•Why are alcohol-free drinks so expensive? Some fake spirits cost over £25 a bottle!English
121·3 months agoFor some people, myself included, drinking is about the ritual and the social aspect, rather than necessarily getting drunk. When I go to a pub, I want to have a beer, but I don’t always want to deal with a hangover the next day, particularly during the working week.
In some ways it’s not that different from people who have decaffeinated coffee. It’s not any cheaper, but you still get to enjoy the experience of drinking coffee.
Of course the answer is no, however I thought the article was interesting because it talks about dogs in folklore:
People have long believed in their dog’s ability to sense spirits. In ancient Mexico, the Aztecs believed that dogs could see ghosts and guide their masters’ souls through the underworld.
Even Wikipedia has a whole page dedicated to dogs in Mesoamerican folklore and myth.

movies@piefed.social•Jezebels, race kink and Cardi B: in One Battle After Another, Black women are still stereotypes
2·4 months agoMy favourite part of the article is where she writes:
Sorry to complicate your enjoyment of your new favourite film. I know pointing this out risks upsetting those Letterboxd loyalists who can brook no challenge whatsoever to their favourite film-maker. To them I say: please don’t worry yourselves unduly about Anderson’s feelings. He’s a big boy. I promise you; he can take it.
I still think it’s a great film, with one of the greatest cinematic car chase scenes, but having read the article, I can see why it has problematic depictions of black women.

Nearly 50 years ago, Cedars-Sinai chief of pediatrics Ben Feingold, published heresy, suggesting that artificial food colors could induce behavioral disturbances.

ADHD@lemmy.world•The Side Effects of Artificial Food Coloring and Dyes: Cancer and ADHDEnglish
5·4 months agoThe article is not claiming that food colouring causes neurodiverdancy. The summary of the article states:
Excluding artificial food colors from children’s diets can improve ADHD symptoms.
It then goes on to explain that food colouring can affect the behaviour of young children, including those with ADHD.
This time, researchers found that artificial colors and other food additives in processed foods appeared to exacerbate hyperactive behaviors—inattention, impulsivity, and overactivity—among young children, with more pronounced effects in three-year-olds relative to eight-or nine-year-olds.
But what happens in children already diagnosed with ADHD if you remove artificial food colors? In a meta-analysis of randomized controlled trials for dietary interventions for ADHD, excluding artificial food colors from the diet significantly improved behavior.
