  • Born: anybody who was born in the land that is now the United States of America. This can include the Native Americans, descendents of European migrants, and descendents of non-European migrants. That’s a whole slew of different accents and cultures.

Bred: anybody who was raised in the United States of America since birth. Again, this can include Native Americans, (second generation or more) descendents of European migrants, and (second generation or more) descendents of non-European migrants.

Something is telling me that’s not what you define as “born and bred” American. Even if you are a big racist who believes only white people can be “born and bred Americans”, there are lots of different accents among white people (a Texan, New Yorker, and Californian have vastly different accents, not to mention those descended from Scottish, Irish, French, Italian, Greek, etc. migrants)

There is objectively no definition of “born and bred” Americans that does not include Native Americans, since they were the first to be born and raised there, and broader definitions are unhelpful in that it lumps in lots of different groups. The racist definition, again, isn’t helpful due to the wide variety of accents among the descendents of the European migrants.

  • If it weren’t for the price of memory (and everything else), the FW12 would be an easy buy for me. It is equal to or surpasses my current 13th gen Intel laptop in every way aside from the display (an amazing OLED to a reddish LCD is not great), and I really want one of their fun colours, especially the purple one!

Maybe in the future I can get one for cheap in the used market? Framework’s “neutral” stance (that is, their unwillingness to criticise DHH and Omarchy. Not nearly as bad as Dell and others, who more blatantly support such nasty politics, but still) bothers me, so buying used also means my money won’t go directly to them.

  • I think KDE did something recently to make everyone angry but I can’t remember what (AI related maybe?)

Partly true. Somebody talked about the idea of KDE Plasma becoming an “AI-native” desktop at Akademy (the KDE conference), and the discussion (which, as far as I’m aware, was all it was. I’m pretty sure it was just some guy, not the KDE team), and the media overblew it with headlines like “KDE Plasma becoming an AI-native desktop???”

There are good reasons to dislike KDE Plasma, but I don’t think this is one of them. If you prefer GNOME because you prefer how it looks, that’s cool too! And again, it’s made by developers who do it at no cost to us, and the fact that Plasma is so good (as is GNOME, Cinnamon, etc.) is awesome

edit: The people who talked about Plasma as an “AI native” desktop in Akademy used to be KDE developers but are no longer active contributors. It was not the KDE team saying “this is what we will do in the future”. There’s a good video about it by Nicco (a KDE dev who makes videos regarding Linux and other bits) if you want to learn more: https://tube.kockatoo.org/videos/watch/b97487b5-b544-4652-8548-c0a732f87f45

  • I haven’t used any of them in ages, I know Collabora is focused on their online suite. Looking at OnlyOffice’s website, they are positioning themselves as an “AI-first” office suite (the LLM tools have been changed to be optional and installed separately since a recent update, but still a bad look)

And WPS Office was always owned by a Chinese company and continues to be closed-source, so no changes there. Again, the same sort of “AI-first” stuff on their homepage, yikes

  • LibreOffice, not OpenOffice. I believe LibreOffice was forked from OpenOffice, and the latter hasn’t had any updates in ages.

I imagine that the UI you selected was the one of the “compact” or “single toolbar” options? It is a little confusing that some of the one functions disappear with those, it would be helpful if it was listed which ones were missing

Apparently it looks identical to MS Office, so it isn’t “better” than MS Office or LibreOffice in a functional sense (arguably less so since it’s probably very buggy code)

I wouldn’t say it’s people (normal people would be using MS Office or LibreOffice most likely) excited that it’s LLM generated, though some AI Bros probably are, I imagine some outlets are promoting this to sell whatever the new model is these days. And when there is a lot of news around a topic, it’s covered by more and more people (something about all press is good press here)

  • LibreOffice is an awesome piece of kit! On setup, they let you select the “tabbed” UI if you prefer something closer to MS office.

Collabora Office is another one that seems neat, have not used it before though. OnlyOffice has weird Russian ties and GPL incompatible licensing shenanigans, I would avoid them for the most part. WPS Office has the best compatibility with MS Office files on Linux I think, but it’s closed-source so not great either. There’s always running a VM / dual booting if you must use MS Office.

Honestly, MS office files have worked fine on LibreOffice, the only big issue I’ve found is that translucent images are a little broken when going from Impress to PowerPoint (all images share the same opacity for some reason?)

  • From reading the thread, it looks like they are dodging the question of what features will be restricted to the commercial license versions (“case-by-case basis” apparently). They keep repeating “no change to people using the app currently”, “no change to self-hosting right now”, etc., but it doesn’t inspire confidence.

I would recommend to read the thread and ask questions there if you have any, but I would definitely have a backup plan ready.

The KeePass ecosystem is awesome and it’s what I use, it’s local-first and you can use Syncthing to have passwords across many devices. KeePassXC for desktop (+ browser extension if you need it), KeePassDX on Android (w/ Syncthing-fork), and if you use iOS, you have KeePassium and Strongbox (w/ Synctrain). The iOS apps are more limited, blame Apple for their restrictive ecosystem and high entry fee.

  • The bacteria don’t produce calories out of thin air, even high school physics will teach you that energy needs to be conserved!

I didn’t do biology, but from my understanding, energy (mostly) comes from the food you eat, and any excess is stored as fat. Obesity occurs when you have too much of that excess where it is a health risk, and differs depending on your metabolism and that sort (which things like gut bacteria can change because of weird biology shenanigans, don’t ask me, I’m a physicist).

But if there is no food, then you don’t intake any energy. Famine is defined as the widespread lack of food (by natural or artificial causes, unfortunately it’s often the latter), and when you don’t have food, you don’t tend to have high obesity rates.
