Yeah I’m not saying they’re going to change. I’m saying they’re stupid.

And not caring makes them kinda dumb and short-sighted in the big picture.

I’ve watched that before. It’s not that I don’t understand why it happens. It’s that said playbook has obvious shortcomings in modern society that the up putting those in power in a worse condition.

I stand by my station my assertion that hording wealth to that degree is just stupid and short-sighted. It lowers the chances that advances the wealth holder would benefit from will happen in their lifetime.

This video on egotistic altruism covers it pretty well.

The more you give, the more your bowl will be plentiful.

But it can be removed as a possibility by circumstance, which is what this comic is getting at.

Because by limiting access to those resources, they can’t be used in ways you wouldn’t expect.

Sure, you might invest in cancer research. But did you back the right horse? Soon enough? What about the person who would have engineered earlier detection if they had gone to grad school, but the resources that could have been used to provide that are tied up in your net worth?

No concentrated approach will ever have the same results as letting millions of extra people work on their millions of ideas. The chances of someone hitting on something that sticks increase dramatically with the number of people throwing shit against the wall.

This is why, in my opinion, billionaires are incredibly stupid.

By hoarding wealth and forcing people to live paycheck-to-paycheck, with little-to-no time for self improvement or leisure. With few resources to devote towards education or career-building, you are strangling the pool of people who could make your life better. Who could find the cure for whatever illness finally gets you. Who could invent something you’d never have thought of that will improve your quality of life.

Before the pace of modern technology I can kind of get the impulse, but modern billionaires are operating on rules of ‘how to win’ from 100 years ago. They are – by any metric – not only socially backwards, but fundamentally stupid. They are too dumb to even get being greedy right.

She’s a scientist with a PHD in Astrophysics and does deep dives on specific topics, generally from the angle of science communication and how it often fails that topic in some way.

Her videos are very simple and low production value, but packed with information. She’s a great communicator and you walk away from each video, not just with better knowledge on a topic, but also with a sense of where the holes in that knowledge are. Like where the limits of the metaphor being used to covey the topic to you exist.

Right, but if you’re request for denied for something medically necessary unless you revealed it, you went anyway (because it’s necessary), and then you got fired… That feels like it shouldn’t be legal (obviously that doesn’t mean that it isn’t).

I’m not sure it would be legal if they were forced to reveal medical information.

Agreed, I grew up in a very conservative area and was pretty homophobic when I started college.

“They can do whatever they want, just don’t ask me to like it” was an important stepping stone towards “oh shit, love is love” and finally actually listening to the experience of gay people.

The Outer Wilds. IMO, non-violence-based gameplay design is an underexplored space, especially in 3-D games. The Outer Wilds manages to feel like a fully-fledged game, rather than a traditional walking simulator, using exploration as it’s core gameplay loop.

Further, it’s main progression system is you, the out-of-game player, learning about the world. There’s no abilities you gain or keys you have to find. You unlock new areas, not as a programmed game mechanic, but as a function of reasoning about what you’ve discovered and gaining insight into how the game world works. Any playthrough could be beaten in about 15 minutes – there’s nothing physically blocking you from triggering the end of the game – but it takes you 15 hours or so of flying around the solar system to accrue the necessary insight to get there.

It’s really a special game.

The thing is that the court only has so much power right now because Congress is so fucking broken. If Congress where in working order it could just legislate all the shit that the court is blocking the executive on.

I didn’t even consider the fact that the fediverse offers us the ability to start having publicly owned social media and government-run instances for direct communication.

That could be very interesting…

A big part of it is people are just angry and stressed in general because the system we live in is fundamentally broken (pretty much no matter where you are in the world, though I am speaking through an American lens since the majority of Reddit is American).

Everyone can feel the effects of an economy and government that just doesn’t work for them. We’re fundamentally divided on how to fix it. Minorites are directly under attack and that manages to leach into most conversations, either directly or sideways. It makes people incredibly defensive.

The fediverse has a higher barrier to entry and, statistically, tech-minded people skew liberal. We’re a self-selecting community that is just more likely to agree – for instance – that trans people are people.

Further, since these services are decentralizedv and self-hosted, we can literally make hate groups unwelcome/banned from our instances because there is no profit motivation for hand-wringing like there is with Reddit.
