According to a June report from the market research data firm Numerator, Walmart accounts for roughly a quarter (24 percent) of SNAP shoppers’ total spending. Given the estimated $100 billion spent by the government on the program annually—roughly $8.3 billion monthly—this would imply a loss of about $2 billion for Walmart if the benefits are withheld for the entire month of November.

Tbh, it wouldn’t surprise me if Walmart and their ilk throw customers, shareholders, and employees under the bus to “restructure.”

Honestly, given how they deliberately place their employees onto food stamps, they should be prohibited from accepting them. Like, there should be a rule that if you deliberately place your employees onto public benefits, you also no longer get any public benefits - you can’t get revenue from food stamps, Medicare or Medicaid, you can’t get tax breaks, etc. Fuck this shit.

The entire grocery sector is about to be bleeding like a stuck pig. My store is already preparing to have our lowest sales on record. I’m in an economically poor Southern town, a large percentage of our shoppers rely on SNAP benefits. Hell, a large number of our employees are on some form of financial assistance or another.

I honestly expect this to be a bigger reason SNAP benefits get continued than the lawsuit recently filed. Trump has been capitulating to monied interests, it was the reason there wasn’t another blitz with the Guard on San Fran, and it’s been a big reason why he’s been walking back tariffs. If his big donors say “Hey, you can’t cut benefits or our profits will go down” he’ll likely capitulate.
