Agree, I can’t leave the automatic pilot and recovering the capacity to speak understandable without coffee in the morning.

Would reducing global demand help? If you live in the U.S., yaupon is a caffeinated, drought resistant, and plentiful shrub that makes a very good beverage. You can grow it yourself easily, but a handful of companies sell it as tea already.

interesting, i’ve never heard of yaupon before!

would be cool to try it but i’m not sure we have it here on this part of the globe (finland). maybe a hippie store might sell it

i’ve already switched to tea due to financial and health reasons after drinking coffee like a maniac. like a litre of black coffee per day. now i drink like 0-2 mugs of tea a day.

i’m not really a big fan of tea though so if there was an alternative beverage with a reasonable amount of caffeine and was friendly to the wallet i’d love to give it a shot

        Yeah, not too far off!

I’ve always suspected it might taste even MORE like yerba mate if it was just processed similarly? Not sure how accurately we’ve preserved the knowledge of how it used to be prepared back when it was commonly consumed, but these days it’s mostly just dried and roasted. Compare that to the very lengthy and complicated process mate gets put through, and the difference in flavor might be more about that than anything inherently different.
