Earlier, after review, we blocked and removed several communities that were providing assistance to access copyrighted/pirated material, which is currently not allowed per Rule #1 of our Code of Conduct. The communities that were removed due to this decision were:
We took this action to protect lemmy.world, lemmy.world’s users, and lemmy.world staff as the material posted in those communities could be problematic for us, because of potential legal issues around copyrighted material and services that provide access to or assistance in obtaining it.
This decision is about liability and does not mean we are otherwise hostile to any of these communities or their users. As the Lemmyverse grows and instances get big, precautions may happen. We will keep monitoring the situation closely, and if in the future we deem it safe, we would gladly reallow these communities.
The discussions that have happened in various threads on Lemmy make it very clear that removing the communites before we announced our intent to remove them is not the level of transparency the community expects, and that as stewards of this community we need to be extremely transparent before we do this again in the future as well as make sure that we get feedback around what the planned changes are, because lemmy.world is yours as much as it is ours.
What are your thoughts on communities about drugs? Pretty big topic for me, although the drug subs mostly haven’t moved here yet, is that because you ban them? If so, I’m wasting my time waiting for them here.
They already kicked the shrooms community out and it’s not part of this “transparent” post because not enough people noticed it or cared.
Food for thought…
That’s fucked up, that’s something that actually can help with several important mental disabilities and disorders. The admins here are seriously becoming even worse than Reddit, and it hasn’t been that long.
Yeah I agree. I understand their concern and I don’t know the law around it so I can’t really be too mad, but I am disappointed. This is turning out not to be what I was hoping it would.
You can understand their motives behind it and still be mad at them, honestly I think they really botched this whole thing. There are much better ways they could’ve gone about this whole thing but instead of doing it they just decided to have a knee-jerk reaction with almost no transparency at all.
The way they handled the piracy communities was even worse, they acted on a troll whining about piracy in the support community who was calling for defederation of dbzer0, they only blocked communities but still, they acted on a single troll’s whiny behavior. It’s not a personal attack against them, they just did a really bad job here.
Now that’s some pretty damned important context…
They did ban the shrooms community earlier, there was a post about it on !support@lemmy.world but it seems like it wasn’t as impactful as the latest decision so they didn’t bother to make an announcement about it.
Brutal. sh.it and lemmy.ca both pre-emptively ban porn. .world bans everything fun. Rolling my own instance means I need to become an expert in securing a public facing server. Guess Lemmy is gonna fail, what possible use is it like this? Back to Reddit, at least there I can talk about things that matter to me, even if I’m being abused by a corporation while I do it. Who’d have thought corporations would be the last holdouts for free speech?
Why are you even here on the fediverse then if your knee-jerk reaction to an instance specific problem is to scab for Reddit.
I was sucked in by the promise of an open platform, but it’s just more of the same under different masters. And at least there I’m not banned from discussing the topics I wish to discuss. Got a better option? I’d love to hear it. Tildes wants nothing to do with drugs.
Why not another Lemmy Instance FYI there’s hundreds of them. I recommend you check them out and find one that seems suited for you. I’m not going to make recommendations because I don’t know exactly what you want. I will say that Unilem.org seems promising if Defederation is an issue for you since they don’t do it at all there.
If I go with an instance that is militant about not defederating, I have to put up with the right wing nut jobs. But if I choose an instance that does defederate, I can’t talk about the topics I come here to discuss. There’s no winning move here, for me. :(
That’s why I said pick one that you think aligns better with your values, also FYI there’s a block option for a reason for users, communities, and yes soon even Instances will be blockable by users. If you aren’t blocking people who upset you then that’s on you.
Quit whining, I gave you the solution which is that you need to do your own research to find one that suits you better, people can’t do it for you. Honestly it was a mistake telling you about Unilem because it’s like presenting the option to be lazy and not do research, which isn’t helpful. People come on forums like this asking other people to do research for them, instead of doing the research and asking difficult questions they can’t find the answer to.
You came on here being reactive complaining about All of Lemmy and expecting people to just feed you instance recommendations on a silver platter, or provide you with better platforms altogether, when you should be doing your own research, you’re moving platforms for yourself aren’t you?
Just FYI I’m trying to help you but you will find that your reactivity and tendency to dismiss big decentralized systems based on actors within them isn’t going to be well accepted, and you aren’t going to receive help from people by being like that, and honestly I don’t blame them that mentality isn’t compatible with decentralized places like this with different servers that have different communities and cultures. It’s like dismissing a whole country because of one backwards poorly run town.
I don’t recall asking you for help. Thanks, though. :)
