It’s a fair, good question. Not super easy to answer.

I use it in the Buddhist sense, though I don’t call myself one. Even there you’ll get different answers. But its generally a kind of presence of mind. It’s not occupied on things in another place or time, it’s experiencing its environment clearly. Uncluttered. A kind of vigilant meditative state, almost. It’s aware of what’s happening, acknowledges it, and carries on.

We’re thinking Scotland. There’s some real nice homes for reasonable prices. My wife’s already a UK citizen so that helps.

Im saying it’s not nearly what we SHOULD be doing, and we don’t deserve to rest comfortably knowing some techbros and Chinese manufacturing are working on it.

Look at what the rich and powerful are doing. They’re literally preparing for the apocalypse. They’ve lied about climate change time and time again but they know what’s coming.

The US doesn’t exist in isolation, the damage this country does affects everyone. That’s how this works. And it will be the Global South who suffers most, unfairly, as always.

So, again, I tell you to be realistic about the future. Sure yes do everything we can - but deal with the existential crisis now when you’ve still got AC.

For me, though, my descendents are right here in front of me. And what’s keeping me going, personally, steers closer to anger than hope. They will suffer. My kids.

Humans 100-200+ years from now will know nothing else. Im sorry for them. But im here now, and now is a time to face facts. Civilization is going to end, for all intents and purposes. Our world, the human world, is dying, and we won’t be able to keep up except as mammals 65mil years ago did, hiding in holes.

What we should be doing now, is avenging the future.
