  • Even disregarding the distinction between bacteria and Animalia… what a dumb thing to think is at all relevant to veganism.

Most people have some ethical objections to killing animals; like most believe it’s wrong to kill an endangered species for sport. But imagine someone doing so and then arguing “Yet you squish mosquitos? Curious! I am very smart.”

  • They do not respond to this logic. The hypocrisy is the point and they consider this hypocrisy good. If you kill, you’re a murderer, have rejected the Lord, and deserve death. Do not waste your breath trying to explain the ethics of the death penalty to someone who supports it because of sheer bloodlust.

If you ask, “What if an innocent person is inadvertently found guilty, executed, and then later exonerated?”, that will not register to them as a valid concern. They think it’s worth it and you are wasting your breath by asking. They believe in a God who ordained a commandment against killing, while also commanding genocide. They think the Creator of the Universe and therefore reality is just like that. It can’t be wrong. By definition.

  • There are film adaptations that essentially adapt the text and frame it so as to be an exaggerated parody of the source material. Adaptations and remakes change elements for all sorts of reasons, sometimes arbitrarily, not always in line with the original creators’ vision. That’s what makes it an adaptation.

Sometimes fans of a work complain so much about “changes” it just makes me think what they really want is the book to be projected on-screen exactly as-is with no deviation or mind paid to how it’s gonna read in 2026 compared to 1955 … But you can just read the book.

I love “Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland” but a completely accurate screen adaptation is impossible. Not just because the narration describes things that are impossible to visualise, but also because some of the cultural jokes are now meaningless.

  • Very true. For that matter, the “wellness” industry in general and a lot of popular wisdom about what ails us is mostly trivial, too.

The amount of weight given to the topic of whether artificial sweeteners are better or worse for your overall health than sugar compared to the time spent on talking about the dismally low percentage of the population who actually eat enough fruit and veg is the complete wrong way around!

Diet Coke is the least of your worries if you’re not getting any fibre, people! And if you are getting enough fibre, protein, and healthy fats, the right level of calories and all your recommended vegetables, then by all means drink all the Diet Coke you want! Which won’t be much because healthy diets leave you much more satiated and naturally energetic anyway.

The reason of course is that avoiding artificial sweeteners or some purported “toxin” is a quick and easy way to feel healthier and feel like you’re doing something without actually having to think about true overall health… Allegorically, everyone’s trying to build a pyramid from the top down.

  • I work retail and I’ve just come to the conclusion that… the system is just never gonna work for how people do.

They’re about as simple as you can make it; scan from one side to the other, scanning one item at a time, into your bag; when bag is full remove it and begin a new bag; continue until all your items are scanned and press “Pay” and follow the prompts.

About 1 in 3 people struggle with this. They scanned from right to left instead of left to right, they pressed “pay” too early and can’t figure out how to go back, they picked up a bag and waved something in front of the scanner so it scanned twice accidentally, there is an “ERROR: Unknown Barcode” popup but they were re-arranging their bag and can’t remember the last item put through, their kid or spouse decided to “help” and now the machine’s confused…

We’ve had them for years and it’s not getting any better. There’s no fixing it. Sometimes customers are dumb, sure (a few I question whether they can even read), but also you can’t blame people for just acting like humans.

  • Exercising regularly and eating healthy and then experiencing the benefits of easier sleep and feeling happier is so frustrating.

The worst feeling came with the realisation that all those annoying gym junkie “you are what you eat”, “eat less, move more” douchebags are correct about everything. Now I’m responsible for my actions, goddammit.

The other week I didn’t get the fries with my normal chicken burger from the fast food place and didn’t get that awful heavy feeling in my stomach afterwards. Made me so angry.

  • Calorie and macro-nutrient tracking/counting.

Healthier choices follow as a normal consequence. Once you’ve got the proof in front of you of the nutritional value of food and what it’s doing for you, it’s really a lot harder to make unhealthy choices again… It’s easier to get fruit and veg into your diet, veg in particular is so filling for how low in calories it is it’s basically “free”.

I’m not on any sort of restrictive diet– low carb, low fat, no sugar, keto, vegan, or anything else– except that I stick to my recommended energy intake. I didn’t intentionally cut junk food out, there’s nothing I’m forbidden from eating, but I ended up eating far less junk food incidentally as a result.

It absolutely is not for everyone– some people find calorie counting stressful or a time drain, and it does of course have an association with disorders– but eating only your recommended energy intake for your age, height, gender, and activity level is a great starting point.

If you’ve stuck to your calorie budget but you’re still physically hungry late at night… Well, your diet needs rebalancing.
