You should be allowed to stand your ground and shoot dead anyone rolling coal. They’re assaulting you and everyone around you.

You could go down that train of thought, but you’ll find it impossible to make any decisions for fear of making things worse. “Should I put out this fire in my kitchen? No, what if the house has to burn down to stop double-mecha-hitler from being born??” is not a useful way of thinking.

I think that part of our problems come from people being too polite. Someone will say something completely stupid, and people don’t want to make a fuss so they let it slide. Peer pressure is like the only thing that changes minds.
If I saw a dude pop out of a time machine and shoot both of these fucks dead, I’d be like “yeah that makes sense”.

Microsoft will continue on inertia for years. but it’s basically a walking corpse full of parasites at this point.

Humans are social creatures. Facts don’t matter. Emotions and social belonging matter. So people who are just immersed in trump-stuff are going to think it’s all normal and good, and reject contrary facts from the out group.
This is part of why right wing media is so dangerous. It feeds the in-group solidarity

I remain surprised no Italian plumbers have visited high ranking Republicans. They’re the worst people.

|| has a similar “oh that’s how it works in other places” behavior. I didn’t realize that for a while.

My hypothesis is that the least competent people use AI the most, and it’s a big multiplier on their incompetence.

Despite civic ignorance, overwhelming majorities are grateful (86%) and proud (79%) to be Americans. Most also believe America is a land of opportunity (61%), and even more believe the American Dream (74%) is available to them personally.
big lol

This is worth knowing about

He should be in a locked, padded, room somewhere

A lot of Linux works out of the box now. If folks started selling preconfigured Linux machines like you can buy for windows, that’s all most people need. Valve is following a good strategy

Hah, I had written something specifically about “they took on risk!” and a retort of “are we a slot machine and lotto driven society then?” but didn’t polish and post it.
For the latter, I might zero in on “they worked hard, maybe. Now they don’t. Should a freeloader get more than someone who works?” to see what happens.

I’ve found “You work all day and get a small salary. The business owner sits around, and gets a huge payout. Does that seem fair?” is moderately effective.

The other core is “I’d rather die of preventable diseases so long as black people suffer more”

That’s a good point.
Though sometimes people are just sandbagging. Like I know one guy is just watching Netflix instead of working. I’m downstream from his work, so it’s a little annoying that I have to wait a couple days to get started.
I wouldn’t rat him out because my labor solidarity beats out my annoyance, but the annoyance is real.
I’m not (intentionally) being rude while knowing that it’s ineffective.
I’m saying the people that believe a flashy YouTube video instead of something uncomfortable are being stupid.
The solution will never be to get them to fall on their face and worship logic. Nor will it be to call them idiots to their face. (Even though some people are so fucking stupid and full of worm paste that I want to scream at them, that’s not appropriate so it stays inside). The solution, unfortunately, needs to be wrapping facts up in ways that make them feel good. We have to cater to this behavior.
Here’s a more concrete example. We do code reviews at work. I could leave a comment that says “Don’t sort this list in place. That’s going to cause a bug at XYZ”. Straight. To the point. I could also leave a comment that says like “hey great work here. And a good call to sort the list! I think you might want to make a copy and sort that so it won’t be weird at XYZ. Thanks so much.”
The latter is a lot fluffier and a little dishonest (it’s clearly not great work), but I have to write more like that. Otherwise people feel bad and whine about it.
I think this is a factor in why people love LLMs so much. They’re always getting fluffed.

We know he’s a monster and yet we do nothing to stop him. The laws are powerless. Simply shooting him is seen as gauche.
Conservatives just say things for the intended result. They don’t care about facts or truth or internal consistency. They’re like cognitohazards.
