Electric Vehicles@slrpnk.net•NYC declares war on fast e-bikes, sends cease-and-desist letters to Amazon and Walmart
5·2 days agoI had a negative impulse because it initially read as “I was there once but I have wisdom on the topic”. It sounds like they’re weighing in on something they don’t have lived experience with.
Also, NYC is one of very few cities in the US that supports a car-free life

Fuck Cars@lemmy.ml•We don’t just need electric cars, we need fewer cars
27·2 days agoYes. I’ve been saying for years that electric cars and self driving cars are solving the wrong problem. The problem is if I need a car to get groceries. The problem is I’m not safe on the street because of all the cars.
People who have never lived someplace that doesn’t need a car are very eager to tell you how it won’t work, though.

Technology@lemmy.world•Microsoft admits it force-installed AI-powered OneDrive on Windows 11, says it's not training on your faces (really)English
342·2 days agoHappily using Linux at home. Played some elden ring today, and the original fallout last week. Did some writing in libre office. It’s fine. And free. I never have to tinker with it.
I’ve had cases where I’ve moved the needle. Got someone to move from “I hate communism!!” to “I see where you’re coming from. Capitalism has problems, I admit”.
For some people, you need to let them feel heard and avoid being too antagonistic.
Some people are just trolls, though.

11·3 days agoNeat. I’d love to work on that instead of at a horrible megacorp.
Maybe they’ll build something to easily report jobs with no salary listed.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•"Don't unionize, just get a better job." When you unionize, you ARE getting a better job.
4·3 days agoStepping outside in NYC feels like it costs 100 dollars every time you do it.
I feel the opposite, because I just walk places instead of driving. Not having a car is a big savings!
I got my monthly food budget around $100/month for a bit when I was unemployed.

1·3 days agoThere’s more to New York than Manhattan. Queens and Brooklyn are often cheaper.
Shit is still too expensive, but there are lucky finds still.

Fuck Cars@lemmy.world•"Public transit is only for people living in big cities, if you're out in the country you *need* a car to get places!"English
14·3 days agoYou don’t need to bring car usage to zero. It’s a win to bring it down.
Maybe let local people decide what’s right for them instead of making blanket proclamations for everyone and every place?
Local, non-expert, people are famously wrong. You’d have everything paved over for more parking if you listened to them.

441·3 days agoIf they know the social media algorithms are harmful why don’t they deal with that? Like Facebook tried to see if they could just make people sad by tweaking their algorithm (they could) and no one faced consequences.
The answer is money and corruption, I expect.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•a central part of why it seems like powerful, rich people live in a consequence-free world is that the social incentives to hold them to account have withered
15·3 days agoThings like this contribute to people calling Luigi a saint. If there was justice through official channels (more justice than merely laws being applied), people wouldn’t cheer for an executive being murdered on the street.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•We can save Social Security. Scrap the Cap!
57·3 days agoIt’s an ass-backwards system. People making small amounts need the money now more!
It should be progressive. The first $x aren’t taxed, then the next chunk are taxed a little, then the next chunk more, and so on.

Work Reform@lemmy.world•"Don't unionize, just get a better job." When you unionize, you ARE getting a better job.
24·3 days agoA fanciful guess: the mass transit over car culture means less ambient isolation. You see and interact with more people from more walks of life. You can walk places after work together, have long talks on the train. It’s less soul sucking than just driving to work and home by yourself.

23·3 days agoI’ve worked a lot of non-union jobs with absolute idiots in charge, where nothing works and its a shit show. I don’t think union is the deciding factor there.

Generally speaking, snakes only attack when they feel threatened.
Well, a lot of conservatives feel threatened. The fear isn’t justified, but it’s real.

Ask Lemmy@lemmy.world•Any advice y’all got for someone like me going to college?
5·4 days agoWithout jeopardizing your academics, prioritize rare things.
TV and video games will always be there. Your friend asking you to come play tennis won’t. Go play tennis even if you don’t think you’ll love it.

No Stupid Questions@lemmy.world•Why do seemingly well-adjusted adults find it acceptable to loudly play tiktoks on public transport?
2·4 days agoNot easily and safely. You could try to talk to them, but most people are kind of brittle and will get defensive if you so much as suggest they are not saints.
Recognize that behavior in yourself, and try to be better. We’re all vulnerable to getting defensive when we’re wrong.

I read “dying of whiteness” a couple months ago and it’s literally that sometimes. Some people would rather die than let those people have nice things.
