Hi guys and gals. I’m pretty much the only moderator who checks in from time to time (and I’m barely here) and traffic has really saw an increase since our original Reddit group was taken down. That being the case, I believe we could use another moderator or two for our community here on Lemmy. The workload wouldn’t be much, we really just need to make sure people are following the rules (ours and those of LemmyNSFW in general), like no underage content or deep fakes, that sort of thing.
With that being said, I’m thinking of tweaking the rules some and would like some feedback. We’ve saw some posts here on Lemmy, which normally would have been taken down, because of the lack of an economy element. Do you think these posts should be allowed here for our LemmyNSFW community? We’re pretty unique on LemmyNSFW and are becoming one of the larger communities, so there isn’t really anything similar to what we’re doing like a popular celebrity “who would you rather?” community here, as was the case on Reddit. I also want to start a three post per day maximum rule, so we don’t overwhelm the servers. The admins suggest, “Please only post a few posts to a community at a time. You may mean well by posting several posts at once, but because of lemmy’s limited algorithms this will saturate the feeds of many people on this instance and other instances.” Of course we had a two post maximum on Reddit, so nothing new really. I may also reword some of the rules and take out any that are now redundant here on Lemmy, and include some of the LemmyNSFW rules, in case people haven’t read those.
Also, as you probably have noted, LemmyNSFW and the Lemmy development team, which are separate, are looking for donations to keep the servers running and updated, so please keep that in mind if you have a few extra dollars one month. It will help in maintaining and improving our experience here, where we have the freedoms we don’t elsewhere anymore. Thanks.
I obviously like narrative type CYOA’s along with regular points and movement economy types.
I also DO not like the Pick celeb A or B or even the 4 options and then APM; I remember on Reddit sometimes I’d have to scroll through like 10 of those to get to a more interesting CYOA. If those are allowed here I would prefer a post limit on that type so viewers aren’t swamped/deluged.
Our working schedules doesn’t lend it easy to mod.
When it comes the limits, we’ve said before that CYOAs should be allowed, even if they don’t contains any economy elements. We should limit “Do you prefer celeb A or B”- posts since those could drown the feed.
So basically, just Economy or CYOAs.
A few thoughts on the posts:
Allow as much as possible - Lemmy is still a tiny tiny community compared to anything out there. Even smaller than somea lot of the forums. From a longevity point of view, content volume and more contributors is especially important.
With that as a basis, I strongly believe that less rules, is better for the community. If after a while, there is enough content to have a natural split then so be it. For now the community (I mean all of LemmyNSFW) and Lemmy itself is too small. The primary data points are:
- Tending community growth has stagnated for the last 6+ months
- The primary developers of Lemmy itself are getting very low numbers of donations and has stagnated even after a recent push for more donations.
On the few posts a day, I do not agree with that philosophy nor is it supported by the recent post of the LemmyNSFW instance. The server is not closed to strained and the admins have said that the server can have files uploaded and be fine so we do not have to resort to links only (something I do/did thinking it was helpful - turns out according to the admins it’s not necessary)
So with that being my basis for thinking I follow the guidelines that:
-
Encourage posting especially OC and show leniency and shield any contribution from rules and things that discourage growth. This includes being pedantic of things like “economy”. It is one of the big reasons I stopped contributing to !public_flashing@lemmynsfw.com and related communities - if my post didn’t fit the narrow definitions of the mod, I got a notification/message. This is a porn site, when people contribute, (without it being blatant advertising) it is my opinion the more flexibility the better.
-
Limits are not conducive to growth of Lemmy and the instance, in fact it can get quite boring here due to the lack of content.
If we align, happy to help mod!
I’ve always preferred rules simply for the sake of clarification, so everyone knows what is and is not acceptable to post, not to be more restrictive. I’m definitely leaning toward leniency and not even suggesting a so many strikes and you’re banned policy at this point, but the rules are there to let folks know why a post might get removed.
I’m also in agreement with allowing as much as possible and building up the community, if everyone else is on board. It’s not the Reddit of old where you could go to one of a half dozen other popular pick a celeb type communities. Essentially the important rules we’ve always had are in line with LemmyNSFW’s rules, such as no minors or fakes and AI altered images, and the latter since that can cause legal issues.
What do you think of the rules as they stand? I’m thinking of only banning people if they, after being warned more than once, continue to harass or insult other members and their posts, to avoid unnecessary negativity in the community. That was pretty rare, but did happen on occasion, on Reddit. Maybe if someone intentionally and repeatedly posts content against the rules also.
The user humungous_badonkers just uploaded like 10 reposts at the same time, that shouldn’t be allowed it drowns out other people’s posts and explicitly discouraged by lemmy’s rules
That’s the kind of thing I was asking about people’s opinions on. We could even have no limits on new, original content, but suggest a limit on reposts. Or just have a generous limit, like 5 per day.
I’m in favor of limits on reposts. Limits on new content might also be good, to prevent someone from spamming low-effort posts.
