We do usually put a thin balaclava for kids already at much lower temps. It covers the neck and also prevents snow from going down clothes a little.

Remember also that this is for kids.

As an adult living just south of Finland, I don’t really do scarves, even at -30. I reckon many Finns probably don’t either.

And shorts and tank tops are acceptable at 15C, just not for kids.

Yeah, Canadian here, scarves are really hit and miss. Almost more a fashion pick vs a cold weather need.

Me, south-east Europe: -20c is a normal winter, +40c is a normal summer (a proper scorcher hits +50).

You should see the size of our wardrobes…

(That said, ‘normal’ winters have been becoming rarer, and this summer was very mild. Go-go-gadget-climate-change, although listening to the rest of the continent whine is getting old…)

That is why I can’t deal with the high temps. I can get warm, put on better gear or make a heat source and be comfy in cold weather. I have very little recourse when its hot other then get out of clothes (that can also not help at all), get wet (also can lead to other issues) or find shade.

yeah, and sending kids out in a tank top, in fucking 20º? They’ll fucking die of hypothermia!

True! What confuses me are two things:

        1. I have never worn long panties without regular panties
        2. It looks like you dress the stockings on top of the Long Johns according to the arrangement

        I have never been to -20”C …

That is actually true. Air behaves much differently at low temps than it does at high temps. At cold temps the air will be much denser. Airplanes for example can take off with significantly shorter runways on cold days, often seeing more than a 50% faster climb rate and acceleration.

That said, I’d bet more than anything, that the bigger difference is how your ear drums behave at lower temps. If those membranes are a little stiffer, that’s going to make a big difference in what things sound like.

That said, while I have flown planes, I’m not a doctor, so I don’t actually have expertise in that area.

Yes you put the stockings over the longjohns whether or not they are the model with feet.

Long johns are a “direct to skin” layer.

As a child in the 80s and early 90s in Germany the maximum layers were the ±0°C row, but with tights instead of the smallest socks. Rest is super accurate though.

Eh, its fine if its a dry cold. Good gear goes a long way and the good news is that after -20 its more or less the same feel.

Yeah, -20 is not that bad, if you dress right. I will say, that the air starts to hurt your face noticeably more, when it drops close to -30 and under. If it is windy, though, that makes the cold brutal even at -15.

Wind is a killer, but I find (at least here) that when it gets -40 style cold it becomes quite still wind wise outside of a storm. If the winds blowing I am going to be inside.

you don’t need as many layers but really your clothing should account for situations where you may be stranded

-14c in a hoodie is fine up until you’re 10-16 minutes outside and your body heat is gone (numbers not exactly accurate but hopefully you get an idea of what I mean)

This is probably from a preschool, though, and a lot of the kids will spend more than an hour at a time outside, so those layers are necessary.

The idea that your body heat can be gone in 15 minutes is in and of itself insane to me coming from a hot desert region, but I guess at some point body heat generation just can’t keep up.

You die if you don’t eat in 30 days they say, 3 days without water, or 3 hours laying in the cold.

There is nothing to do when it’s too hot though, it’s so insanely brutal 🥵, when it’s cold just dress up or stay inside :-)

The winter clothing is essentially designed to trap existing and newly generated heat but if you are wearing a hoodie you’re just cooling down slowly
