LLMs are explosively imprecise, statistically luke-warm, grey goo extrusion spinsters, which is why all the logos for ‘AI’ companies are variations of arseholes.

Is that a trick question? Only imposters and truly inept people cannot live without AI support. The rest of us use their knowledge and experience to do our work, like we did in the years before this “Gift for the terminally inept” came about.

I get that people are afraid of change, which some countries do a bad job at protecting people from. That’s a separate (political) issue. I’m personally not a fan of how the U.S. handles such transformations. However, that aside, wouldn’t it be cool if we could do more ambitious things and have better quality of life?

For example, embodied AI will be able to take over household chores. It can already do very basic programming chores (babysit this, wait for that and kick this off if it works or try that if not) that don’t make sense to automate with a shell script.

It is not far off the normal argument you see that somehow a chatbot is a revolutionary advancement to every facet of society. Even though, when pressed, all they can come up with is the nearly totally unrelated programs doing work on massive datasets in science and medicine or that it can almost write working isolated code in some languages.

Some of the requests that come into my office now it’s like, I know the person barely even knows what they’re asking for, but they put it in the shape of a valid request so now I’ve got to expend energy to educate them on how what they’re asking for doesn’t make sense.

If they’d just come to me with honest questions and a rough outline of what they wanted, I could’ve helped them, but because they insist on filtering everything through an LLM I’ve got to try to communicate through this thick, meaning-eroding medium. It’s like trying to talk to someone through a mattress. Whatever happened to having the courage of your convictions. sigh

People have assumptions of what correct communication should be, and it generally has a minimum page length instead of minimum content amount.

The worst cases I’ve seen is when they’re trying to convince someone of something verbally, they get the agreement very quickly, but get stuck in convince mode rather than moving on since it shouldn’t be that easy.

Maybe. It may be recent enough that people could lapse back to some level of thinking for themselves.

Let’s explore something much more dependent now and see if it holds up. What if smartphones disappeared? We still have cellular phones, the Nokia makes a comeback, but the use of smartphones, iPads, tablets, that whole concept is gone. You have to get on a computer to do any of the internet type interactions.

        Would people lose their minds?

Reviewing large AI PRs is the worst. I think being verbose is a good thing through function and variable naming, and comments for head scratching bits of cose, but AI can take it to an extreme degree with comments everywhere. Reading and critequing/discussing code and patterns used to be one of my favorite parts of the job.

My coworker who’s fully in bed with AI barely understood the code he wrote before, but asking him a question now is just an indirect means of using Claude. It has gotten to the point where I’m writing my PR comments more in the style of a prompt because it’s obvious he just pastes them in to Claude anyway.

One thing worse than AI PRs is AI bug reports.

One is a user that experiences a symptom that could be described in a quick copy/paste with maybe a sentence. Instead they have “AI” dig in and generate a dissertation on what it thinks is the issue and the original issue is lost in the AI diagnosis. Since the user doesn’t even have it wired up to actually test the hypothosis, it is just the AI first guess, which is frequently wrong. Wasting my time and failing to provide data.

The other is someone letting AI run over code and report “bugs” as in “it disagreed on some detail in the code, even though no person has actually experienced misbehavior, nor is the particular issue a security issue, but it might be an issue that some person one day eventually might hit”.

But I totally feel the coworker that had questionable code before that is now just utterly hopeless thanks to AI. I have nothing to do with his project but occasionally got called in to figure out and explain why his code would flip out. It hasn’t passed test in over a month as it’s now eternally buggy. Any attempt he makes to fix bugs inevitably lands with more bugs. But it’s too far now, he can’t turn back (CodeGen rewrote his codebase in a language he can’t follow, so he can’t hand edit, and he’s too afraid to roll back to when he almost understood his code). Hilarious one time within a week where he reported he could work on his project no more because he had exhausted his tokens, and without the tokens he can’t do anything anymore. Framed this as a failure of management to fund his needs adequately.

I have been shocked at just how many people, people long in the business seem to actively hate writing code. How much additional work they are willing to go through to claim victory in development through prose. Spending hours trying to get CodeGen to fix a trivial CSS issue in a web page that would have taken less than a minute if they just hit f12 and looked at the offending element. I can’t fathom how they could stand their careers for sometimes two decades before CodeGen came available if they hated it just so much.

Out of the few that said AI made their productivity better, most of them couldn’t code.

Note this point makes business leaders so excited. They hear “cheap labor can be productive”. Missing the point that the output is supremely dubious. They are “productive” because they don’t even know if the result is good or not, and so they can accept what is handed to them.

Currently, have a feature I thought we should have done, but management said one of the sales reps vibed up the answer, so we don’t need to do it. I used it and pointed out that the result was actually incorrect, but management thinks I’m just some luddite because they can’t understand the nature of the problems either.

Exactly. I’m a professional, but I use AI in my work now. It makes things easier and faster (by digging though logs for 24 hours and whatnot), but I did that before.

Sure I’d be able to do my job just the same, but getting paged at 2am, I’d have to spend 45 mins figuring out what to do (clicking links, waiting for page loads, parsing 2000 log lines, etc) while AI does it in just 5-10mins. I get to focus on my actual work instead of the bullshit oncall alarms.

I hate the environmental impact, but those that know how to use it and program it are actually benefiting from it.

The environmental impact can be discussed. Maybe training Kimi 2.7 is like sending a rocket to the moon. But using it locally can be optimized and then is as much as running your GPU. Arguably the impact is similar to gaming then.

This is partly what’s been said in this thread (from my skimming of the top 10 comments) but also because a lot of people are so fucking dumb that AI has been like Neo in the Matrix for them. They are so dumb that using basic words to search and filtering through the results seems like black magic. Now they feel empowered and smart. It’s extremely fucking scary.

I only read the top 10 comments because I have taken my sleep medication and it’s starting to win the fight ATM. Just needed to get this out before it was too late.
